Iron Range Engineering was established in 2009 as a partnership between Minnesota State University, Mankato and Itasca Community College. The partnership was supported by former Senator David Tomassoni and former Tom Rukavina, innovative faculty and administrators, and a wide range of industry partners. The IRE program was designed to provide students with cutting-edge opportunities to learn engineering by doing engineering.
Over the years, IRE has been recognized nationally and internationally for its innovative approach to engineering education. The program earned the ABET Innovation Award in 2017 for its commitment to challenging the staus quo in engineering education. In 2018, IRE was also recognized as a top 10 emerging world leader in engineering education in a study from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In 2019, Iron Range Engineering began implementing the Bell Model -- a unique educational experience where students are able to spend two years working in engineering internships and co-ops while completing their technical coursework. This new model allows us to serve even more students from community colleges across the United States.
